30 things I’ve learnt in 30 years

On May 7th 2018 I turned 30, which seems like such a long time ago now but I wanted to mark the occasion in some way. Anyone else think this year is really flying by?

I celebrated my 30th birthday with a Star Wars themed party which my sister planned for me. It was a surprise party and I honestly had no idea she was doing it. It was perfect from themed food, to family and friends in costume and props being on display – I loved it. She also held it on May the fourth: Star Wars day.

Here’s a few photos from the night…

30 things I’ve learnt in 30 years.

* It’s OK to let go of toxic friendships.

* You’re never too old for Disney (or anything for that matter), and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

* It’s OK to let go of possessions that no longer hold value for you. In fact having a clear out can be a great way to clear your mind.

* Make time for your family, your friends and most importantly, yourself.

* Budgeting is important!

* It’s OK to return unwanted items to the store – within the return T&Cs.

* It’s never too late to seek help.

* … and, it’s not a sign of weakness if you ask for help.

* It’s OK to cry and it’s OK to be not OK.

* It’s not too late to apologise.

* When life gets rough you find out who really cares.

* Find things you truly enjoy instead of things that just fill time.

* Not everyone will like you or needs to… and that’s OK.

* Be honest about who you are and what you enjoy in life and never apologise for who you are.

* Be nice to everyone. You never know the struggles they are going through, just as they don’t know yours.

* Experiences are far more valuable than possessions.

* Stop comparing yourself to others.

* Take care of your mental health – it’s just as important as your physical health.

* Exercise can be fun.

* University isn’t for everyone.

* It’s OK to change your career path.

* Take a picture (or a video) – it’ll last longer. Cherish those memories.

* Not everything needs to be posted on social media.

* Always trust your gut instinct.

* Mayonnaise isn’t as bad as I thought it was – I hadn’t tried it until I was 26 years old!

* Self-care is always important.

* Always stay in contact with the friends that show they care.

* Do what you love. If there’s one thing you’ve ways wanted to do, do it. Time is short.

* Learn to say ‘no’ and be more assertive.

* But on the flip side, learn to say ‘yes’ and do the things that may scare you. Try and get out of your comfort zone.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post as much I enjoyed writing it. 🙂

    […] I think the main reason was fear of ridicule. It took me many years to be OK in my own skin and to embrace my geeky side. But now I love going to comic con which has become one of my favourite hobbies. I wear Star Wars clothing out and about, celebrate Star Wars day, and even had a Star Wars theme for my 30th birthday party. […]

    This so true honestly and it’s never too late to learn any of this. never too late because we always have the present to grow.

    I just turned 29 so I totally understand how you’re feeling as I remember being 18, 21 and lastly 25 and now I’m here and I’ll make the most out of it.

    Love this post. I’m 31 and I think you learn a lot by the time 30 hits. You do see more things from an actual adult perspective but you’re still 18 in your head!
    P.s. I’m a massive star wars fan too! Your party looked amazing!

      I know exactly what you mean! I’m constantly looking for more adult adults to help me out with things.

      Star Wars is awesome❣

      Thanks! My sister really pulled out all the stops with that one. Still can’t believe she cut that Millennium Falcoln pizza!

    What an inspiring post. I turn 30 next month and can relate to a lot of these. Also, as someone who visits Walt Disney World frequently, I can attest that you’re never too old for Disney!

    This was such a lovely post – and your Star Wars party looks amazing! I completely agree with you about never apologising for who you are, it’s a lesson that took me a long time to learn but now I have. And, in a similar vein, learning to say no and being more assertive is something that I’m trying very hard to do right now – so far so good, fingers crossed. Although, I have to disagree with you about exercise being fun – NOOOOOOOOO, haha! xx

      Thank you! My sister definitely out did herself with my party. Assertiveness and saying ‘no’ is still a work in progress for me, but I’m certainly saying it more often recently. Which I think is a good thing!

      Haha, it took a long time for me to enjoy exercise! I think it’s about finding the type that’s right for you. I’m definitely not a gym bunny, but I enjoy group exercise classes, especially zumba or dance fitness.

    I don’t like mayonnaise too but after reading this, I might have to try! Belated happy birthday! ❤️

      Thank you! 🙂 I tried it by accident, I ordered a tuna mayo sandwich without mayo and they put mayo on it. I decided to try it instead of complain and ended up liking it.

      Thank you. 🙂 Disney is great at any age, and I think I love it more now I’m older. There is a lot of hidden adult humour in Disney films that I missed as a child.
