5 ways to keep fit without going to the gym.

Yoga mat, weights, running shoes 🏃💪

I enjoy going to my classes at the gym, but sometimes life gets in the way, I don’t find the time to go or the class gets cancelled – the instructor is away, they can’t get cover etc. In cases like these, I’ll try to exercise at home or around my estate.

1. Wii Fit (or other work out video games)

I’ve had a Wii Fit and the Wii Fit balance board for years now and highly recommend them. There are so many different challenges and exercise types to choose from – I like the boxing, step and hula the most but also enjoy the cycling and running aspects. The running is perfect for when it’s too cold or too wet to go for a run outside.

What I like most about the Wii Fit is it tracks your progress and your weight loss.

2. Floor exercises

Use your body weight to work out. I took the plank challenge last year where you start of with a three reps of a 20 second plank and increase the length of time you hold the position each day. The plank can strengthen your core.

Squats, crunches, lunges – all great ways to tone up your legs, bum and stomach. You don’t have to use weights, remember to work at your own fitness level.

3. Use things around the house.

You can also use things around the house to help you excercise – grab a chair for some tricep dips, a tin of beans (if you don’t own weights) for some bicep curls or use a wall for a wall squat (the ball shown in the linked article is optional!).

I’ve also heard of people running up and down the stairs or using the stairs for push-ups, tricep dips etc.

4. Walking or running

Towards the end of Summer and early Autumn last year, I went running with Ryan. We used to run 1.5 miles around our estate then cooled down at home with some strectches (and yoga – for me).

If running isn’t for you or you’ve never run before, you could try the ‘Couch to 5K‘ challenge by the NHS or, walking is always a great way to get more active. Weather permitting, I always go on a walk on my lunch break at work.

5. Try yoga

The Wii Fit (mentioned above) has a great aection on yoga and there are many online tutorials and videos you can use as well. There are daily yoga classes on Yoga.com you can try.

I enjoy yoga, especially after cardio (like running that I mentioned earlier), I find it very relaxing.

How do you keep fit? Do you go to the gym? Excercise at home? Run?

I go to the gym three times a week but there are so many things you can do at home. I used to run, but not anymore – but you can really go anywhere to run, even just around the block. And floor exercises – so many of them. Especially ones that work on abdominal muscles.

I think most people go to the gym because they need a personal trainer to motivate them, or the gym motivates them. If they stay home they might not do anything, haha.

Haha, I know what you mean! I usually feel more motivated by a personal trainer or the other ladies in my classes.
