Favourite childhood books

Today is Roald Dahl day where we celebrate the life and work of this talented author. In tribute I thought I’d share my favourite childhood books with you. Of course there are a couple of Roald Dahl stories in here.

Roald Dahl day 2018 focuses on James and the Giant Peach which was his first children’s book. It’s a wonderful story and one of my favourite book to screen adaptations. My favourite character is Miss Spider.

My favourite childhood books

Matilda

This was the first book I remember reading as a child and is the one that inspired my love of reading. I even borrowed Moby Dick from the public library because Matilda read it in the book – much to the librarians surprise! I fondly remember her asking my mum if I wouldn’t prefer something from the children’s section. 😅

Matilda

The BFG
Matilda was the first book I read but The BFG has to be my favourite Roald Dahl book. It’s packed full of humour, mild terror and a happy ending. I was very happy when they released the live action film in 2016 and was pleasantly surprised how good it was!

The BFG

The Hobbit

This is the first book we had in group reading time when I was in Primary school. It’s a great story and I’ve reread it countless times – I remember my head teacher belittling me for reading ahead and for reading chapters at home! Oops.

Sadly my copy of The Hobbit got damaged after washer fluid spilt on it in the boot of car. But I’m hoping to replace my copy with this Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit set.

Winnie the Pooh

As I said in my previous post I’ve learnt that you’re never too old for anything. Especially Disney. I’m aware Winnie the Pooh and friends didn’t start out life as Disney characters but they were when I read the series of books.

My Gran bought me a stunning collector’s edition from Waterstones, which I’ve read it it’s entirety. They’re fun, loving stories and always put a smile on my face.

Winnie the Pooh

My sister and the rest of “team bride” went to see the Christopher Robin movie which I can only describe as simply heart warming. I adored it.

My favourite character is Eeyore in case you’re wondering. 😉

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.

Last but by no means least is the first book I remember being read as a childhood which was The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

I still own my copy and a copy in Polish as well. I was trying to learn the language and thought a children’s book about numbers and food would help lol. Which it did somewhat – I could successfully order a slice of cake. 😉 🍰

The Very Hungry Caterpillar books

I was gifted The Very Hungry Caterpillar cupcake set for Christmas one year and fondly remember my sister baking me a themed cake and cupcakes for my 26th birthday.

What are your favourite childhood books? Have I mentioned any of your favourites above? Let me know in the comments. 😊

[…] I started two non-fiction books at the beginning of the year, but haven’t finished either of them yet! Even with the UK lockdown, I’m still going into the office every day and haven’t felt motivated to read when I come home. But we’re still only mid-way through the year so I have plenty of time to achieve this goal. And if all else fails – really short children’s books. […]

I absolutely loved the Roald Dahl books when i was a kid. The witches had to be my favourite i think, but Matilda is definitely up there. Roald Dahl also wrote a biography, but a very kid friendly one, which i also really really loved and found so interesting/funny as a kid! He definitely had such a interesting life and would recommend the read! Great post and very nostalgic!

Thanks for your comment Molly. I enjoyed The Witches especially the movie adaptation – the main witch was very freaksome. I haven’t read his autobiography yet but I do own it. x

    Hi Kimmi –
Some real classics there. ☺️ I loved all these books.
I loved Whatever Next by Jill Murphy and The Mousehole Cat by Antonia Barber and Nicola Bailey. Being read to as a child made me a book lover for life.
    Lovely post.

The Hobbit is a great book. It’s a shame you can’t remember any of your favourites but I’m sure your parents would. I read a couple of French language books in school when we had our French lessons.
