Favourite childhood toys *

Last week I covered my favourite childhood books and this week I thought I’d share my favourite childhood toys with you. Maybe you’ll see some of your favourites?

Beanie Babies

My sister and I collected TY Beanie Babies like crazy in the 90s. We had our favourites displayed in “cubby cubes” and each one had a tag protector on it. If you’re not familiar with Beanie Babies each tag contains their name and a poem about them.

Some of our Beanie Babies collection

My favourite (and actually my first) TY Beanie Baby was Inch the inchworm.

Inch the worm is a friend of mine, He goes so slow all the time, Inching around from here to there, Travelling the world without a care.

Lego

Lego will be one toy I’ll never grow out of! Although my sets are a lot larger and more complex than my childhood attempts to make a Lego house. I think Lego is a great child’s toy, helping with motor skills and fuelling their imagination.

One of my favourite sets is the Doctor Who Tardis set which took me two days to complete.

Star Wars action figures and play sets

Star Wars has been one of my favourite fandoms for as long as I can remember, I think it’s safe to say it was my first fandom. As a child I have many figures and a couple of Star Wars play sets I enjoyed playing with.

My favourite being the Death Star play set which I found recently while I was sorting through the spare bedroom at my parents house!

That’s no moon…

Sylvanian Families

My sister and I had hours of fun playing with Sylvanians – each animal had it’s own personality, some had jobs, some lived in a mansion and some on a canal boat. She would usually play as the hedgehog or rabbit family (who got to live in the mansion) and I would play the cat family living on the canal boat or in the cottage.

We still own our collection of Sylvanian Families and the lovely staff at the Sylvanian Store* in London kindly sent me one of their spooktacular Halloween sets to go with our collection. 😍 The set includes two baby trick or treaters and their pumpkin cart, 🎃 along with a handful of Halloween accessories.

The babies will feel right at home with the rest of our collection.

The set is very cute and the cart can be attached to other pieces such as the candy wagon, which fits great into the Halloween theme. I could have seen my sister and I playing with this set.

If you’re a collector or a parent with a child that loves Sylvanian Families, I’d recommend paying the shop a visit. Not local to London? No problem, they also have a very user friendly website.

Tamagochis

I fondly remember owning a 101 Dalmations tamagochi named ‘Patch’. I took it everywhere, except to school – my Gran kindly looked after him while I was there.

Once I left him on a table in the Little Chef – I cried. Luckily my mum rang them up and we went to pick ‘Patch’ up the following day. Thankfully the staff were kind enough to keep him alive for me. 😅

I couldn’t find my old one so I hunted the internet and found this cute video someone made of theirs.

I also owned a yellow one which looked like a chick but it didn’t get as much love – sorry little chick!

Thomas the Tank Engine trains

Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends were the first toys I remember playing with. I had many of them but my favourite character was always Diesel. I also had a toy garage which Thomas and his friends visited frequently. 😉

My mum loves to tell anyone who will listen that I used to push them around in a ladybird pram.

What were your favourite childhood toys? Do you still own any of the toys you had as a child?

So much nostalgia! I loved Sylvanian Families, Tamagotchis and lego too. I also was super into Polly Pockets.

My mum used to collect beanie babies and I inherited half of her huge collection when she passed away. My sister got the other half. We all foolishly believed that they’d be worth something years later. It’s been 15 years since I inherited my part of the collection and I don’t believe the value of them has gone up at all! I don’t think I’d part with them anyway as they meant so much to my mum.

I’m just trying to think if there’s any other childhood toys I liked, I’m sure there were.. but my brain has gone blank. I just remember liking some of the ones you did and Polly Pockets. I had a lot of Polly Pockets.. I have no idea what happened to them all either which is kind of sad.

    Thanks for the nostalgia! ♥

Thanks for your comment hun. I don’t think I ever owned Polly Pocket but my sister had one as well as Barbie dolls.

We had so many Beanie Babies! I don’t think ours have gone up in value at all either lol. We haven’t ever parted with them though. That’s sweet that you both have part of your mum’s collection.

Aw, what a lovely trip down memory lane, this is a lovely post. I used to play with Thomas the Tank Engine too, and Lego. In fact, Flora still plays with some of my old lego and we’ve had to buy some more for her as well. Although I’m less keen nowadays as I keep treading on the wretched stuff, haha! xx

Ah! Stepping on a Lego brick is the worst – Ouch!! It’s great that Flora gets to play with your old Lego set, I still have a lot of mine from when I was a child. It can be theraputic to build something with it. x

Omg I remember all of these haha! I was obsessed with the ty toys, I had over 60 of them when I was younger but when we were moving a couple of our boxes were stolen by the moving company and those along with some of our electrical like my ps1+ps1 and Nintendo were stolen 😦 Tamagochis were another of my absolute faves, I once kept a pet alive for a full week and I was so proud I stood up and told my class haha

I remember those TY beanie babies as a kid! I had a few, hehe. Oh man, Legos are the best! It’s amazing to see what they push out with them these days. You can never be too old for them, hehe. Oh man, I had a Tamagochis for a little bit – those were the best! Unfortunately, I don’t have any of my childhood toys :(.

Man, I loved Beanie Babies and Tamagotchis. My mum said I wasn’t allowed to get a Tamagotchi until they arrived in the $2 shop. As soon as they arrived I went and got one. And since they were from the $2 shop, they kept breaking down super quickly. So we’d take them back on a weekly basis and get a new one 😀 I loved them though.

Haha, bless you. It may have been cheaper in the long run to buy one of the brand names. I’m pretty sure my little chick came from a budget store (Woolworths) which no longer exists. Thanks for your comment. xx

Ha ha yes, I had a tamagochi turtle and a collection of beanie babies. My favourite toys back then were Barbies and Polly Pockets. Fab post, thanks for the nostalgia <3 xx

Lego and tamagochis! I used to love playing with them!
I was weird kid, either playing with barbies or fighting with action figurines in over-complicated stories.
What a lovely and nostalgic post<3
