The Reading Tag

I saw this reading tag on Karen’s blog, ‘Imaginary Karen’, and couldn’t resist answering the questions myself. I love reading so this tag really appealed to me. It’s also my first tag!

The Reading Tag

Physical book or e-book?

Physical book, definitely. I’ve tried using e-readers before and find myself getting eye strain or headaches a lot more. But also, I like owning physical books and showing my collection on my bookshelves (yes, plural 😉 ), as well as the old book smell. I think Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer explains it nicely…

“Smell is the most powerful trigger to the memory there is. A certain flower, or a-a whiff of smoke can bring up experiences long forgotten. Books smell musty and-and-and rich. The knowledge gained from a computer is a… it, uh, it has no-no texture, no-no context. It’s-it’s there and then it’s gone. If it’s to last, then-then the getting of knowledge should be, uh, tangible. It should be, um, smelly.”

S01E03: ‘I, Robot… You Jane’.

Audio or book in hand?

I can’t listen to audiobooks. I’ve tried but often tune out after a while.

Paperback or hardcover?

Either, but probably hardcover as I like to keep book spines neat and tidy.

Adult or Young Adult?

A bit of both, I have my fair share of both adult and young adult books.

Series or standalone?

Series mostly. Some standalone’s just seem unfinished or leave me wanting more but there never is! Which is annoying. Also, in some cases standalone’s end on a cliff hanger, like Stephen King’s Cell for example. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy cliff hangers but enjoy them a lot more if it’s resolved eventually.

The only thing I hate about series’ is having to wait so long for the next one! I’m one of those people that can read a book in less than a day and will often stay up really late to get to the end of a book. It’s a bit of an obsession. Haha.

Dog ears or bookmarks?

I HATE dog ears. Bookmarks.

Breaking the spine or barely opening the book?

Usually barely opening the book.

Borrow or buy?

I tend to buy books. In fact, one of my dreams is to have a room in my house filled with books – a library I guess. Like you see in old houses in movies or on TV. Although, before I had a steady paycheck and while I was in school I used to spend a lot of my time in our local library. And the one at school. So I guess you could say I like both? 🙂

Bookstore or online?

I love physical books stores. There are two bookstores in my local town, one is in a really pretty old building, with a sofa for reading and the other has chairs for you to sit and read the books. I remember attending the midnight release of the last Harry Potter book and my sister and I started our books in the store. They also had a man dressed up as Hagrid and decorated the shop with wands and feathers. That’s something you wouldn’t experience buying online.

Online is definitely cheaper though, but I’d still rather support my local stores when I can.

Fiction or non-fiction?

I like non-fiction, but I’d say most of what I read is fiction.

Fantasy world or real-life issues?

As long as it’s a good story, it doesn’t matter much to me.

Monster read, or short & sweet?

Either. It depends on my mood.

Starry-eyed romance or full of action?

Usually full of action.

Curl up in a Snuggie or bathe in the sun?

I don’t even own a Snuggie! But I definitely prefer staying in curled up on the sofa, with a blanket and a good book. 🙂

Read the review or decide for yourself?

I can’t remember the last time I read a book review. Often the book I read are sequels, written by one of my favourite authors, or recommend through ‘word-of-mouth’. For example, my mum suggested I’d like The House of Night book series and I started reading those based on that – I do like them by the way – but I usually decide which books to read by myself.

Zombies or unicorns?

Zombies. Definitely.
