Bar snacks at The Waggon and Horses, Cirencester

A couple of week’s ago Ryan and I met up with my family in one of our local pubs, The Waggon and Horses for a few drinks after work. I was starving, so decided to try one of their bar snacks; chicken in a basket.

When I ordered the dish I expected chicken nuggets or some other breaded chicken but was presently surprised to receive chips and two chicken breasts with the skin on, yummy.

There were two options for the dish, spicy or non-spicy. I went for spicy and quickly found out the spicy part was the chips. They were delicious! Seasoned with Cajun spices (which I love) and very crunchy. It is very easy to get chips wrong and have them soggy or too salty but these ones were perfect.

We demolished the chips between the three of us and I enjoyed the chicken. To be honest the chicken was disappointing compared to the chips, it was sticky and somewhat bland. I may order a basket of the chips by themselves in future.

As I’ve talked about before the Waggon and Horses has a well stocked bar of spirits, especially they’re gin collection, unfortunately I was designated driver so drank diet coke and lemonade, while Ryan and my dad enjoyed the house wine and Halloween Hob Goblin between them.

The Waggon and Horses has unique decor from vintage cameras on the mantle to beer mats on the walls and doors hanging from the ceiling. All of which add to the charm and old British pub feel of the place. I think they need to decorate the restaurant however; it does not have the same feel as the bar and is a lot more modern.

It was a great evening and nice to catch up with my family. We spoke about our plans for later in the year and my sister’s birthday, which is in December.

What have you been up to recently? Do you enjoy old British pubs like this one? What do you think of the decor?
