My Birthday Celebrations in Lockdown

My “lockdown birthday” was last week – May 7th to be exact – and as I’m writing this Iโ€™m certainly feeling the post-birthday blues. And I’m quite sad it’s over for another year. Usually, we go out for the day, or to one of my favourite restaurants, but it was nice to have a relaxing day at home instead. There were also some unexpected surprises (all from a safe distance, of course) from a few of my loved ones.

Celebrating my birthday in lockdown wasn’t something I was expecting but it turned out to be one of the best. Aaron worked so hard to make the day special for me. He put up balloons, bought me a giant badge, and gave me a pink party hat – which you may have seen on my Instagram stories. I wore it all day, but only while we were in the flat! At midnight he sprayed silly string while one of my friends sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to me over the House Party app. Which was a nice touch! Although we went off to bed shortly after.

Breakfast in bed – the perfect start to a lockdown birthday

We woke up around 9 am and Aaron made me breakfast in bed. Usually, we go out for McDonald’s breakfast, so he made me an at-home version instead. He used a toasted bagel, sausages (instead of sausage meat), and vegan cheese slices. It was delicious! And I could definitely get used to an at-home McDonalds.

After breakfast, I opened some of the gifts my mum had kindly dropped off from my family. At a safe distance, of course. As well as some from my friends. I was overwhelmed by the generosity and thankful for every gift I opened. I received some beauty products, cupcake sprinkles, and books, among other things. Mum also said there were more surprises to come!

An afternoon nature walk

Since we couldn’t travel Aaron and I decided to use our one-hour exercise to walk around the lake near his flat. In case you’re not aware the UK guidelines state you can only go out once a day for exercise, with members of your household. So we chose the lake to see what local wildlife we could spot. We saw ducks, geese, and a family of swans, to name a few. It was a lovely day out and we’re going to do more walks like this very soon.

It’s weird how lockdown has made us appreciate our local areas more. Isn’t it? I love walking, especially nature walks, but don’t often do it in my home town. Perhaps I’ll spend the day being a tourist once lockdown is over. There are plenty of walking routes nearby and many of them are historical walks too.

Lockdown birthday surprises and Star Wars…

I wasn’t expecting to see my family today because of everything that’s going on. But my mum surprised me with some delicious cupcake pops by Emerald City Cupcakes. While my sister and her wife left some gifts outside her flat for me to pick up on our way home. It was nice to see them, even if it was only through the window!

We arrived back at the flat and sat down to watch the latest Star Wars movie, The Rise of Skywalker. Having watched the other Star Wars movies earlier in the week. As part of our Star Wars Day celebrations. I know this movie gets a lot of hate, but I actually enjoy it. It parallels the original trilogy nicely and there are some great cameos to look out for too.

Because it’s not a birthday without cake, right?

Aaron was insistent I had cake for my birthday so he made me some birthday cupcakes to enjoy. But as he’d never baked before I guided him through it. We used a watermelon cupcake kit that Aaron picked up in Tesco with some soya milk and Flora dairy-free spread. The cupcakes tasted delicious! Although our decorating could do with some work, haha. I’d definitely buy this cake mix again.

My lockdown birthday celebrations finished with a glass of rum. Followed by a couple of horror movies on Netflix – which is my favourite genre. Aaron also presented me with a birthday cupcake – complete with a candle to blow out. Although it took some time for him to find something to light it with! Neither of us smokes – so we don’t usually have lighters in the flat. After blowing out the candles, Aaron cooked up some delicious burgers for tea.

Sure it was not the birthday I was expecting this year, but I loved it, and thank you to everyone who helped me celebrate. Whether that was online, at a safe distance in person, or by sending goodies through the post.

Have you celebrated a lockdown birthday? What did you do? Let me know in the comments.

[…] When it comes to basic ingredients such as flour or sugar you may be tempted to reach for the big name brands. But let me tell you a little secret – store own brands work just as well and for a fraction of the cost. In fact, all my baking recipes include store brand ingredients, unless a specific baking kit was used. It’s worth noting that these baking kits can also be picked up relatively cheaply. Just check out this watermelon style one Aaron bought me for my lockdown birthday. […]

This sounds like a lovely day all things considered with lockdown. It’s so sweet that he made such an effort with the balloons to try and make the day special and great that you still managed to see some loved ones at a distance. I’ve only celebrated my mum’s birthday during lockdown and mine is mid-late July so I’m not too sure where we’ll be by then. Happy belated birthday, I’m glad you still managed to have a good day! x

It sounds like you had a lovely birthday, despite the current situation. I celebrated my birthday in lockdown too and whilst I was upset for a moment that I couldn’t go out for the day, I soon realised that once it was all over, at least I would have an excuse for a day out.

Lovely post, Kim! Sounds like you had a really lovely birthday with lots of thoughtful sentiments! Those DIY watermelon cupcakes look so good. I also like the sound of your nature walk too. Belated happy birthday! I wanted to apologise for not being online as much to chat due to an unfortunate year last year for my family. Everything is fine now though, so not to worry. Iโ€™m hoping to reconnect with the blogging world. Hope all is well with you. ๐Ÿ™‚ xx

Aw, Kim, belated happy birthday and my goodness, what a lovely day you had! I mean I know it was in lockdown but it looks like my perfect day right there. I do feel for people having lockdown birthdays but the silver lining is that family and friends all seem to have been super inventive and come up with some amazing celebration ideas ๐Ÿ™‚ Lisa xx

My husband and I both celebrated our birthdays in lockdown this year. In April, we set up the tent in the back yard so that we could ‘go camping’ with our pups. We also had a backyard campfire to add to the whole camping feel. Meanwhile, for my husband’s birthday we set up the computer on the back deck and had a ‘ party’ on House Party. We enjoyed drinks with friends from all over. It was nice, honestly. I feel like we had the chance to see people that we wouldn’t have if we did a local, in-person party.

Awww no, Iโ€™m sorry Iโ€™m so late with this but HAPPY (belated) BIRTHDAY!! I bet the world looks nothing like you would have ever imagined for this birthday so itโ€™s not surprising more birthday blues likely follow. Bless Aaron making the MaccyDโ€™s bagel imitation and prepping the cupcakes. The pressies look fab too and a film day is a good way to enjoy a few hours at home so Iโ€™m glad you were still able to have a good time of it lovely.
    Caz xxxx
