Ways to Celebrate Halloween at Home

This year Halloween has the potential to be amazing; it falls on a Saturday (which means a whole day of spooky fun). There’s a full moon that evening, in fact, the second one this month (called a blue moon). And, for those of who like astrology, the moon falls in Taurus this month too (which happens to be my starsign!)… So it goes without saying that I’m a little bit excited to be celebrating Halloween at home this year. I’m just hoping the sky is clear enough to see it! 🌚

Moonlit walks aside, I’m also planning to listen to my favourite Halloween music, watch a few scary movies, and enjoy some sweet treats this year. But there are so many more ways you can celebrate Halloween at home… Here are a few of my favourites. 🎃

Ways to Celebrate Halloween at Home

Halloween at Home Party Treats

Probably one of the most common things we associate with Halloween is trick or treating. So you’ll want to get some of your favourite sweet treats in for your Halloween at home celebrations.

Grab a Halloween themed bowl like this one and fill it with an assortment of sweet treats. Some of my favorites are Haribo Fantastics, Haribo Scaremix, Skittles, Fizzy Strawberry Laces and Halloween cupcakes.

Another idea is to hide the Halloween treats around the house and have a scavenger hunt (similar to an Easter egg hunt).

Of course, you’ll want to provide some savoury and/or healthy snacks as well. My go-to is a spooky themed snack board full of cheese string ghosts or broomsticks, witches’ finger hot dogs, ‘pumpkin’ oranges and an assortment of deli meats. Think of it like an indoor picnic.

Have a Halloween Games Night

There are lots of fun games you could try at home this Halloween, from the traditional ‘bobbing for apples’, to scavenger hunts, or even holding a pumpkin carving competition. Just don’t forget some prizes for the winner(s)!

These can include Halloween themed stickers, pins or badges, and of course, sweets. Poundland or your local discount store are always a good shout but you could also support small independent businesses as well.

Another great alternative would be a video or board game night. And there are so many horror video games and board games to choose from! A few of my favourites are Resident Evil or Friday 13th, and for board games you can’t go wrong with Zombiecide.

Go For a Spooky Themed Walk

Wait until the sun has set, then head out for a spooky, Halloween-themed walk. You may wish to walk through your neighbourhood to see what decorations have been put out, or see what local events may be on. In the UK the English Hertiage sites are putting on a few woodland walks this year. Including the grounds of Audley End, Belsay Hall and Walmer Castle.

While you’re outside, collect leaves, acorns, pinecones, or twigs for nature crafts back at home. Or try a nature or Halloween themed scavenger hunt.

If you’d rather stay at home, then sharing ghost stories around a garden campfire (or indoor fireplace) could be a great alternative.

Halloween at Home Dance Party

Pop on your favourite Halloween playlist and dance the night away. If the weather’s nice you could even take the party outside in your garden. One of my fondest Halloween memories at home was dancing to Thriller in our back garden.

Halloween Movie Night In

There are so many great Halloweeen themed movies, from family movies like The Addams Family, to the Autumnal vibes of Practical Magic, and of course horror movies. So pick a few of your favourites, grab some popcorn and join your family on the sofa for a good ole’ movie night in. You could even go one step further and set up a projector in your garden for a movie night under the stars (and get a glimpse of the full moon!).

Halloween Baking

If you’re anything like me you’ll find any excuse to do some baking. And holiday themed baking is one of my favourites! You could make up a batch of cupcakes or cookies, buy ready made ones and decorate them at home. Or why not try a Halloween variation of the classic gingerbread house?

Get Cosy with a Good Book and Seasonal Drink

After a busy day I find there’s nothing better than curling up with a good book. Especially if it’s cold or raining outside. Add a hot chocolate and cosy blanket to the mix and I’d quite happily spend all day reading!

If you want to keep with the spooky vibes, you’re in luck, as there are some amazing horror writers out there. My favourite being Stephen King! Try Cell, IT, or The Shining if you’re a first time reader. 🖤

Have a Spooky Spa Night

One thing I find incredibly relaxing after a long day is a hot bubble bath. Especially when the temperature starts to drop as it’s done so recently. Although a bubble bath may not scream (no pun intended!) Halloween to you, there are ways you can give your bubble bath a more spooky feel.

Lush has a great range of Halloween themed bath bombs and bath melts which can turn your bath a variety of spooky colours. But their not the only option, there are some incredibly talented independent business as well, such as Cherry Bomb Boutique on Etsy.

When your bath is ready, turn the lights down low, light a few candles and listen to some spooky music. You may also want to pop on a face mask, paint your nails (maybe not in the bath!), or give your skin a well deserved pamper session.
